The electric vehicle (EV) revolution continues to accelerate, with global sales of plug-in and all-electric cars seeing massive growth in the first half of 2023. According to recent data, the top 5 automakers accounted for over half of all EV sales worldwide during this period.
Chinese manufacturer BYD maintained its position as the top selling EV maker, delivering over 1.2 million plug-in electric vehicles in H1 2023 for a 21.4% share of the global plug-in market.
US-based Tesla followed closely behind in second place, selling nearly 889,000 EVs for a 15.2% share of plug-in sales. Tesla was also the leader in the all-electric segment, with 888,879 battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations representing 21.7% of the BEV market.
Germany’s Volkswagen Group claimed the third spot among plug-in sellers with over 425,000 units sold and 7.3% market share.
Chinese automakers Volvo and SAIC rounded out the top 5, selling 359,543 and 322,921 plug-in vehicles respectively.
In the all-electric segment, BYD took second place with 615,064 BEV sales and 15% share. Volkswagen followed in third for BEVs, selling 311,359 for a 7.6% market share.
The market dominance of these top EV sellers highlights the accelerating transition to electric mobility globally. With improving technology and rising demand, EV adoption continues to grow at a rapid pace. The leading automakers are investing heavily to capture increasing market share as the era of electric vehicles firmly takes hold.
